Internal vs. external hosting

in Hosting

Hosting a website means having a website of an individual or an organization use web hosting services from a provider. But in large organizations or companies, there is a question whether it is better to have internal or external hosting. Understanding the difference between these two types of web hosting is not hard.

Internal hosting means having your own servers which you use for hosting website. External hosting is using a third-party web hosting service that provides you with the servers and let them worry about the networking and technical support that your website needs.

However, there reasons to believe one is better than other, and the other way around. I will mention several benefits and downsides about both internal and external hosting.

Internal Hosting

As we mentioned before, internal hosting is when a company or a corporation use their own server and operate within their company. In this case, they are responsible for everything about the hosting such as:

  • Maintenance of the servers
  • Costs
  • Technical support
  • Information control
  • Data backup
  • Security systems

The benefits of this kind of hosting is that you have direct control of the service, data is kept on the spot, all managing and operating responsibilities are within the company. But it can have some downsides as well. For example, you need a lot of space for storing your servers and personnel who will be working on maintenance and sustainability of your servers. The bigger your business, the bigger is the need for more space and people. This can be very expensive and is one of the reasons companies decide to use external hosting.

External hosting

On the other hand, external hosting means having a third party providing you with the hosting service and hosting your website.

Since there are many companies who are in this business, you can always find a good deal for your company for a reasonable amount of money. This would save you a lot of money, since you won’t be needing additional space or IT experts to work on hosting your website. Also, they have great technical support and you wouldn’t have to worry about having problems with your network. Even if some problems do turn up, these hosting companies have a high-quality support and they provide it 24/7.

If you ever need to change your hosting specifics, you can upgrade your package or change it in accordance to your needs.

There are of course some downsides to external hosting, and that changes with your business growth. If you are a big corporation than your hosting needs are also bigger, which means you will have to pay for these services every month as long as you need them. You won’t have direct access to these servers, which can be troubling to some companies. There are some security issues, since you are not the owner of the servers, and your hosting provider can access the data on the servers he is hosting to you.

All companies are different, and they all operate in different manner. However, smaller companies usually tend to choose external hosting, since it is easier and cheaper, and larger companies like to keep their web hosting needs in house. When choosing what kind of hosting to use, keep in mind your needs and requirements and chose a hosting service which would pay off in a longer period of time.
